One Minute Gaming #62 - Blokshock Revolution

This week, I've been playing a skill based arcade style game called Blokshock Revolution. You control a blob that spins around a central point by tapping and holding the screen. It releases a fireball when you release your hold but it's kind of hard to control the direction!

Large and small squares are coming towards you from the top of the screen and you can earn boosts by hitting 2 with one shot or hitting several in a row. You can also bounce your fireballs off the sidewalls and control the speed of them by how long you hold down your finger to make your blob spin.

There is a goal line running out from each side of your central blob - once the squares pass that line, you have only a few seconds to shoot them. You can shoot behind you if you're good but the only time I manage to shoot behind that line is by accident!

It's a pretty straightforward game to learn but it takes skill and speedy reactions to release your fireball at just the right point! Not a skill I've gained yet but I'm getting there.

The graphics are clear and simple, the control is one finger touch and the music is an EDM trance style track. There isn't a cash shop but you can pay to get rid of the adverts and get more music tracks too.

I'd give Blokshock a 7 out of 10 - it's fun for a while but it's frustrating too.

If you have a game you'd like to suggest, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

So until next time, have fun!

One Minute Gaming #61 - Endless Pacman 256

Endless Pacman

This week, I've been playing a game called Endless Pacman. It's the old Pacman game but with a twist - instead of individual maps to beat, this one just keeps scrolling and disintegrates behind you.

This makes it really difficult to clear a whole area of dots but the good thing is that the ghosts disappear too if they are in that part of the board.

There are all the original power ups and bonus items but in Endless Pacman, you also earn weapons and other useful power ups. The first one you earn is a laser so when you eat a laser dot, you shoot everything in a straight line in front of you. It's great fun seeing a whole line of ghosts die to your laser!

The graphics are true to the old game and so are the sound effects. It took me a little while to remember how to even move - I was trying to drag my Pacman around but of course, it doesn't work like that! You have to swipe a direction and he will take the next turn in that direction when he gets there.

I enjoyed it for the first 10 minutes or so but then it all came back to me why I never really liked the original game! I probably won't be playing this one regularly but for fans of old school games it's a definite 8 out of 10 at least. It's also a great way to show your kids some of the origins of video games too.

If you have a game you'd like me to try, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or you can leave a comment below.

So until next time, have fun!

One Minute Gaming #60 - Brawl of Cthulhu

Brawl of Cthulhu - Blaugust Day 21

This week, I've been playing a fun new game called Brawl of Cthulhu. It's a modern take on the old side scrolling platform games but with great graphics and a cool soundtrack.

You play a cute Cthulhu who is awakened from the deep ocean and comes to land to rain death and destruction on civilisation. You have to collect stars, keys, power gems and star maps as you run around punching things to death. If you collect the right power-up, you also get a cool tentacle whip to play with!

It's not just a side scroller though - the wonders of modern technology mean that it has more depth and you can move to the back or front of the screen too. That actually makes it kind of hard to control with the on screen joystick controller.

There's a shop full of power ups which you pay for with the stars you collect but there's also lots of fun hats available too. The hats are very expensive in stars so of course, you can buy star packs for real money. You can also get rid of the adds for 99 cents but I haven't actually seen any so don't waste your money there!

I found it fun but frustrating so I'll give Brawl of Cthulhu a 7 out of 10. Younger kids might love it but my fat fingers just can't handle the controls.

If you have a game you'd like to suggest, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

So until next time, have fun!

iPad Games I'm Playing

iPad Games I Play - Blaugust Day 20

Nonmail often asks how many of the games I review on One Minute Gaming am I still playing - well, here's a screenshot of my iPad just this morning. I had a big clear out a couple of weeks ago when I removed about 20 other games that I still played but not very often.

My morning routine is fairly simple - wake up, stagger to kitchen to start the coffee then PC on and head to the bathroom. Once I have my coffee in hand, I open my Twitter feed and whilst scrolling back to the previous evening, I open Clash of Clans to collect my resources, start a new build if I can & catch up with clan mates chat. Next, I open my Cooking Fever as there's a daily bonus of 2 gems - woo hoo! It's not much but it adds up over a few days to the next upgrade for whichever restaurant I'm playing at the moment.

Then it's on to my Mini Warriors - this one I've started playing a lot more recently. I find that I can gain almost a full level of XP in the time it takes me to catch up on my overnight Twitter feed. I only need to start each battle and leave the rest on automatic - I'm grinding levels a bit to get the upgrade materials for my army.

My Fallout Shelter is still a bit temperamental - crashing regularly but not so often as before. I'll probably be deleting this one soon - it just hasn't grabbed me like some of the others.

The game I'm playing the most right now is Twenty - I hit a high score of 20 about a month ago and I'm still trying to beat it! It's taking about 20-25 minutes for each match now though so I'm trying to cut back - I get dead legs after about 15 minutes (yeah sorry, maybe too much info there huh?)

Agar.io, 1010 and 2048 are all games I can play while hanging out on Skype with Cold or on the telephone with my Dad - they don't take too much concentration so I can still hold a conversation.

I haven't reviewed the Mahjong Free game yet - I actually paid for the expansion pack when I first got the iPad so this is a game I've played for a couple of years now. I don't play it regularly but when I do, I tend to get hooked for a week or two then just stop playing it again.

The next tab on my iPad is full of games I haven't played yet but want to for my One Minute Gaming segment. You can check out reviews for all the above games and loads more too by clicking the tab in the menu bar.

If you have a free iPad or iPhone game you think I should try, you can leave a comment below or link me on Twitter @NevAHAddict.

One Minute Gaming #59 - Agar.io

Agar.io game screen

One Minute Gaming - Agar.io - Blaugust Day 16

This week, I've been playing a fun little game called Agar.io. If you remember the old Snake game where you eat dots to grow longer and have to avoid your own tail, it's a little bit like that. You are a blob (for want of a better word!) and you have to move around eating dots that are all over the play area.

This game is available for ios, android and online so be careful - it's easy to get hooked and then get your fix on any device!

Unlike Snake though, you don't grow longer, you just become a bigger blob. You can split your blob to become multiple blobs which means it's easier to collect more dots. That's only a short time though and the other blobs are soon reabsorbed.

There are other blobs on the play area too - avoid the ones which are bigger than you or they will absorb you and it's game over. You can eject some mass to capture blobs smaller than you so if you are small, you need to stay well away from the big blobs or they might shoot and catch you.

It's a fun game to waste a few minutes on here and there but it's not so addicted that I can't put it down. I'd give agar.io a 7 out of 10 - very simple to play but hard to master.

If you have a game you'd like to suggest, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

So until next time, have fun!

One Minute Gaming #56 - Fallout Shelter

Fallout Shelter Living Quarters

This week I've been playing Fallout Shelter, a resource and people management game based on the ever popular Fallout game.

You are in charge of an underground Vault - a safe place from the world after a nuclear war and you have to manage the resources like power, water and food to keep your survivors alive.

Each survivor who turns up at the door to your vault has variable characteristics and each characteristic is best suited for one of the occupations inside the vault. As Overseer, you assign survivors to work in the most appropriate area.

You can send survivors back out into the world to scavenge for additional supplies like weapons and armor. You need armor and weapons to defend your vault against raiders and rad roaches otherwise your may get over run.

You can also expand your community by assigning male and female survivors to the living areas - if they hit it off, they retire to the bedroom and she then emerges pregnant!

Sadly it's not optimised for iPad 2 so I've been having regular crashes and it's not available at all for Android until August but from what I've seen, it looks like a great game. I'd give fallout Shelter an 8 out of 10 and I'm hopeful they will make it work on older iPads & iPhones soon.

If you have a game you'd like me to try, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

So until next time, have fun!

One Minute Gaming #55 - Can You Escape?

Can You Escape?
This week, I've been playing a clever puzzle game called Can You Escape? You are in a room with only a locked elevator as your escape route so you have to search the room for the key.

It's not quite that simple though - there are color coded locked drawers, hidden compartments and all sorts of other small pieces of the main puzzle to solve before you can get access to the elevator key. There are a few items to find too - like a screwdriver which you then use on a later piece of the puzzle.

It's the sort of game that can keep you occupied for 5 minutes or an hour, depending on what you like and how much you think like the game designers. The first level took me ages as I couldn't quite work out what to do but once I got the hang of it, I whizzed through the next few levels.

I'd definitely suggest having a pen and paper handy though - there are some 8 piece puzzles to work out and trying to memorise a number or color sequence gets frustrating as it resets every time you leave that screen to go and re-check the sequence in the earlier clue.

I'd give Can You Escape a 7 out of 10. It's pretty good for what it is but I don't think it's a keeper for me.

If you have a game you'd like to suggest, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict, leave a comment below or leave a comment on the new AH Addict Facebook page!

One Minute Gaming #54 - Twenty

This week, I've become addicted to an action puzzle game called Twenty. If you like games like Tetris then you'll love Twenty. The idea is to pair up numbered boxes until you make one to Twenty, hence the name.

The controls are super simple - just slide the boxes around the screen with a swipe motion. You pick up a number 4 box and slide it into another number 4 box. That will then become a number 5 box and you continue matching as fast as you can.

There is a timer and when it runs out, a new row of boxes will appear at the bottom. When you get to 10, you will see some of the boxes becoming linked in pairs. This makes it harder to slide them around but you can break the links by matching one of the linked boxes. When you get to fifteen, boxes are linked in threes and if you do get to twenty, boxes are linked in fours.

The aim of the game is to get to twenty but that isn't the end of the game. You keep going to see how many twenties you can make. My high score is 6 but I have no idea if that is good or not. (Update: My high score is now 12!)

I love this game and played it for hours on my plane trip home last week. I'd give Twenty a 10 out of 10. It's simple to learn but hard to beat. I'm so hooked on this game, I've even paid out a few dollars for the upgrade! That just gives a few extra twists to the basic game and isn't necessary at all.

There are no adverts and the music is actually quite soothing.

If you have a game you'd like to suggest, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

So until next time, have fun!

One Minute Gaming #53 - Cooped Up

Cooped Up
This week, I've been playing a silly jumping game called Cooped Up. You play a bird on a wire and you have to jump to higher wires to catch worms and flying bugs. That's the easy bit though - there are other birds on the wires and you have to avoid them but don't take too long to jump up as there are other birds below you too and if they catch up to you, you have to start over.

The wires are actually more like elastic and the controls are based on that. You swipe down to twang the wire and make your bird jump. You can ping gently and off center to make you bird move sideways on the same level or ping it harder to make him jump up a level.

If you time it right, you can also ping in the middle to jump over a bird on the same level as you but be careful, you have to get that exactly right or you will land on them and die.

After a couple of hours playing, my high score is still only 20 something - it's frustrating but challenging and the sound effects make me giggle. The graphics are fun - weird little birds and great big fat ones as well as caterpillars and bugs to catch.

I think kids would love this game although if they get frustrated easily, you may want to wrap your phone in bubblewrap because it will get thrown!

I'd give Cooped Up a 6 out of 10, purely based on it's frustration factor. The rest is great though!

If you have a game you'd like to suggest, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

So until next time, have fun!

One Minute Gaming #52 - Slice It!

This week, I've been playing a puzzle game called Slice It. Amarochi on Twitter recommended a game called Slice which I couldn't find so John, I hope this is the one you meant!

The basic idea is that you have to divide a shape into a set number of equal parts using a set number of lines. So for example, on the first level you are given a square and told you have 1 line to cut the shape into 2 equal parts. Obviously that is pretty simple but later on, the shapes get more complicated and the number of pieces and lines you are set also increase.

You are given a number of stars between 1 & 5 depending on how equal your pieces are but if you leave any extra bits or don't use up all the lines you need to use, you will fail the level.

It's a very simple idea that gets difficult fairly quickly but I'd imagine it could be great for teaching kids about basic shapes, dividing areas and hopefully, patience! There's no timer so you can take as long as you want and one little bonus is that the background is like graph paper so you can even count the squares to approximate your areas.

I like Slice It - it's a great little game for filling a spare 5 minutes here and there so I'd give it an 8 out of 10.

If you have a game you'd like to suggest, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

One Minute Gaming #51 - AA

AA - free game
This week, I've been playing a game simply called AA recommended to me by Sayomara and Amarochi on Twitter. It's a deceptively simple pinwheel game but watch out!

Each level starts off with a spinning wheel in the center of your screen and a number of pins sticking out of it. You then have to tap the screen to add a set number of pins to the wheel but you mustn't touch any of the existing pins.

At the earliest levels, it's not too difficult but once you have to add 12 pins or more, the spaces between the pins already on the wheel become smaller and smaller and it gets a little crowded!

On some levels, the spinning center wheel changes direction or can change speed too. It's a game of focus and patience. You need to focus hard to not touch the existing pins and you need patience to wait for the larger gaps to come around. You also need a good sense of timing which is not my strong point!

There's a whole range of these games by the same company - look for FF or RR - all have the same basic idea of adding dots to a moving targets but each game is just slightly different. I think I'll stick to AA though - it's hard enough without adding more complications!

I'd give AA a 7 out of 10 - it's fun but frustrating and I couldn't play it for long without throwing my phone out the window!

If you have a game you'd like me to try, You can contact me on twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

So until next time, have fun.

One Minute Gaming #50 - Beast Quest

Beast Quest
This week, I've been playing an action adventure game called Beast Quest. It's a mini RPG type game where you're an adventurer out in the wilds and you have to pick up quests, fight beasties and collect stuff in the environment.

It has great graphics and the music isn't too annoying either. You hold the run button with one finger to run and use another finger to control your direction. Fighting is pretty good too - you have a button to use your shield, one to use your sword and 2 left & right buttons to dodge incoming attacks.

I'm only level three so far but I think I'm hooked already! You use coins from quest rewards and kills to upgrade your sword, shield and armor but there is a maximum improvement level depending on your own character level so you can't get too overpowered for the quests you are doing.

There is a real money shop where you can buy gems or potions but you pick up gems whilst questing too. I don't know yet if it's going to be a buy-to-play game but so far, I'm pretty impressed. There's also a bunch of achievements to get and those reward you with gold or gems.

Overall, I'd say Beast Quest is pretty good and well polished so I'm giving it an 8 out of 10.

One Minute Gaming #49 - Back To Bed

This week, I've been playing an unusual puzzle game called Back To Bed. It's quite surreal but definitely gets your brain working.

The basic idea is that you are a weird little dog who has to stop his owner from falling off rooftops as he sleep walks in a weird landscape. You have to pick up a giant apple and place it in your owner's path to make him turn away from an edge but then you have to grab the same apple & place it again at the next danger point.

The objective is to guide your owner back to bed which could be anywhere on the map. One little tip I can give - the owner always turns clockwise so sometimes you have to be really quick with placing the apple as there may only be 4 or 5 steps between turns and edges all around.

It's not the fastest puzzle or the hardest but it is compelling in a weird kind of way.

I'd give Back to Bed a 6 out of 10 - it's not my favorite puzzle game but it's ok if you like this sort of game.

If you have a game you'd like me to try, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

One Minute Gaming - Help Request!

Deemo - One of my favorite game images
So if you've been hanging around here at all, you'll know I do a regular segment called One Minute Gaming. I play various free iOS games on my ipad and then record a one minute review.

Some of the games I've reviewed and didn't rate very highly, I find I am still playing and others that I rated highly on first few plays didn't last the distance. I'm currently hooked on Mini Warriors which Cold talked me into playing and Cooking Fever which someone on Twitter suggested for my segment. I just finished my 200th level on that one and I haven't bought gems yet!

There's also Clash of Clans keeping me occupied as well as a solitaire card game and a game called 1010 which I play when I'm chatting on Skype as it isn't timed or noisy.

Cold was wondering recently how many of the 49 games I've reviewed so far, do I still have on my iPad - well, I did a quick count and I currently have 22 different games on my iPad. I haven't reviewed all of those yet as I've just downloaded a few for the next three or four segments.

As for how many I had before I deleted a bunch to make room - well, let's just say my iPad was almost completely full so I had to delete a load of stuff including about 15 games that I had been playing occasionally. Overall, I'd guess about 26-30 of the games I have reviewed are either still on my iPad or have only recently been deleted!

I'm beginning to struggle to find games to review - yes, there are 1000's out there but so many are just plain awful and many are obvious clones of others, so it's becoming harder and harder to find a game that is either different or even vaguely good!

So, I'd like to ask for your help in finding new games to try out and review. Do you have a favorite that keeps you occupied or one that you play occasionally but don't want to delete off your phone or iPad?

You can leave a comment below or message me on Twitter @Nevahaddict and this time, I promise I'll keep a note of your name alongside the game you recommend unlike the Cooking Fever person - I wish I could remember who that was - their ears must be burning as I swear at them every time I lose another 30 minutes playing it!

I've also updated the page with all the games I've reviewed - if you need inspiration for a new game, you can check out my list and see if anything takes your fancy. There's a Soundcloud link in each post so you can either read the post or listen to it, whichever suits you best. I hope you are enjoying these One Minute Gaming segments - I know I really enjoy doing them and it's a great challenge to keep to about the one minute mark!

One Minute Gaming #48 - Sky Force

This week, I've been playing a game called Sky Force, recommended to me on Twitter by playrider2. It's an airplane shooter and it's pretty good fun!

You control an airplane by swiping with your finger, It auto-fires mini laser bolts at enemy planes & ships but you have to pick up stars and rescue people too - all the while,  avoiding elements of the landscape and the weapon attacks from your enemies.

The stars you collect can be spent at the hangar where you buy upgrades for your ship like additional health and better weapons. The first couple of levels aren't too difficult but you do have to achieve all the objectives before you can progress. That took me a few tries I must admit, my reflexes aren't what they used to be!

It's not the most addictive game I've played but it is good fun albeit a bit frustrating at times & I get cramp in my finger if I play too long! lol

I'd give Sky Force a solid 7 out of 10 - very playable, quite fun and great graphics but it's not grabbed me like some other games have.

If you have a game you'd like me to try, you can contact me on twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

One Minute Gaming #47 - Cooking Fever

This week, I've been playing Cooking Fever. It was recommended to me but I lost the name, I'm so sorry but thank you! It's a speed based strategy game in that you have to serve various combinations of food and drink to your customers. You start off in the Fast Food Court - flipping burgers and hotdogs, fries and sodas but I've also played the bakery and am now on the Chinese Restaurant!

Each customer pays you & tips you so you use the cash to build cooking upgrades as well as restaurants upgrades like tables, tv and music systems. Each upgrade costs gold but some cost gems too. Don't spend your gems too easily at the lower levels, you will need them much more later.

I've heard criticisms that you have to spend real money to buy gems to progress but so far, I've managed not too. I built my gold up by playing levels over to hit the 3 stars and then I used the excess gold to spin the wheel at the casino! I got 25 gems that way. You get a couple of gems just by logging in each day too.

You also get gems just by leveling up but that can take a little while. I'm enjoying it, it really is quite addictive at times so I'd give it an 8 out of 10.

If you have a game you'd like to suggest, you can contact me on twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

So until next time - have fun!

One Minute Gaming #46 - Pixel Dungeon

This week, I've been playing a game called Pixel Dungeon, suggested to me on Twitter by Mike Sherretz. At first glance, I thought 'great! a platform type game' but once I opened it up, it turned out to be a vertical jumping game!

You play a knight in shining armor, jumping and bouncing your way up the screen, collecting diamonds as you go. The only control you have is the tilt function for left or right but don't miss the next platform or you'll fall off the screen and have to start over! You can jump off the screen to each side but make sure there's a platform to land on or you'll die again!

Some platforms have dragons on them which you need to avoid (or you die) and some have power ups like extra bounce or speed. You can buy upgrades in the store with the in-game currency and you can also change characters too.

It's a great game for kids or for killing 5 spare minutes & the graphics are kinda cute. The one big downside for me is the adverts between each game. I wouldn't mind if they were just static pop ups to close but these aren't - they are 5, 10 and even 20 second video ads which you can't close until the timer finishes. You can pay real money to remove the adverts but I don't think the game is good enough to pay out for!

It's not a bad game at all but the ads kill it for me so I'd give it a 4 out of 10.

If you have a game you'd like me to try, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

So until next time - have fun!

One Minute Gaming #45 - Dark Echo

This week I've been playing a creepy puzzle game called Dark Echo. I'd suggest playing it in a dark room with headphones on if you want the full effect - echoes, footsteps, flies buzzing, squeaky doors etc.

When you first start up the game, you are presented with a black screen & two tiny footprints. As you tap the screen, you give off sound waves which show as white lines and bounce around your immediate area. They give you a guide to the shape of the room or corridor as you move around a map you can't see!

Beware though - if those sound waves turn red, then it's a danger zone or even worse, something that will chase you. There's also areas where the sound waves turn yellow - those open locked doors and gates in other parts of the map.

It's basically a maze game but you can't see more than a few steps ahead the whole time. The sound effects really do creep you out a bit though especially if you're concentrating hard & someone taps you on the shoulder!

For a simple but very effective game, I'd give Dark Echoes an 8 out of 10.

If you have a game you'd like me to try, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

One Minute Gaming #44 - Empire Z

This week I've been playing a game called Empire Z. It's a tiny bit like Clash of Clans but based in a ruined city and fighting against zombies. It's much more complicated than Clash of Clans though.

There is a wider variety of resources to collect and manage - food for your troops, lumber, oil and metal for production items as well as a bunch of buildings.

You can build farms, mines and lumber mills etc outside your defences whilst inside you build the larger units like housing and hospitals. There's also a recruiting station for new troops and a cloning center to revive fallen heroes.

You also have research to do to develop various skills - in combat, defence or economics categories. The combat skill takes you all the way from recon to Zombie dozers at the top end! You will need to join an alliance to take on larger enemy units but you can set your troops off exploring too.

You don't get a choice where your city is placed on the map but you do get a free one time teleport to move it once you join an alliance. I haven't done that yet though.

I'd give it a solid 8 out of 10 - great level of detail and management that Clash of Clans just doesn't have!

If you have a game you'd like to suggest, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict or leave a comment below.

So until next time, have fun!

One Minute Gaming #43 - Word Crush

This week I've been playing a word puzzle game called Word Crush. It has two modes, endless and arcade where you're up against a timer and all you have to do is make words from the grid of letters you are given.

Once you have used the letters they drop out of the board and new ones replace them - if the word you made was good enough, you get bonuses on some of the new letters. If you manage to combine enough bonus squares, you get a combo prize which bumps your score up.

In the endless mode, there is no timer so you can take as long as you like to make some really long words. In the arcade mode, you're up against a timer - the longer the word, the further back you push the timer.

Arcade mode also has three difficulty levels, not only does the timer get quicker but you get more consonents to replace  letters so you need to make words with multiple consonents rather than vowels.

It's not the most enthralling game I've played but I do enjoy word puzzles and this game has no additional real money costs, the adverts only appear between games and it keeps my brain working fast. I'd give it a 7 out of 10.

If you have a game you'd like me to try, you can contact me on Twitter @NevAHAddict.

So until next time, have fun!
